Heavy Security At Kgosi Mampuru As Vusimuzi ‘Cat’ Matlala Prepares To Testify Before Parliament

Security has been intensified at the Kgosi Mampuru Correctional Facility in Pretoria as alleged criminal kingpin and attempted murder accused Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala prepares to give evidence before Parliament’s Ad Hoc Committee.

Matlala’s legal team attempted on Tuesday to secure a postponement of his appearance, arguing that his incarceration had taken a toll on his mental health. Their efforts were unsuccessful, clearing the way for his testimony.

The inmate has become a pivotal figure in allegations made by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, who claims elements of the justice system have been infiltrated by criminal networks.

High Security Measures at Kgosi Mampuru Prison

Correctional Services spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo dismissed suggestions that Matlala’s imprisonment had created exceptional circumstances.

“In my whole life with Correctional Services, I am yet to hear of an inmate who would say it is nice to be in prison,” Nxumalo said. He added that inmates often raise various issues, but the department remains guided by the Correctional Services Act.

Nxumalo explained that the Act outlines how offenders must be treated, including exercise hours and access to services.

Nxumalo emphasised that the facility has a wide range of professionals available to support inmates’ wellbeing.

“We have got lawyers, nurses, psychiatrists, physiologists, all disciplines we have them here to cater for all the needs of the offender,” he added.

Matlala’s appearance before the Ad Hoc Committee is expected to draw significant attention, given the seriousness of the allegations and the high-security environment surrounding his testimony.
