Health Minister Dr Aaron Motsoaledi Undergoes Successful Eye Surgery

Dr Aaron Motsoaledi, South Africa’s Minister of Health, underwent successful eye surgery on Thursday at the St John Eye Clinic of Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital in Soweto, Gauteng. The operation was performed by a team of young medical professionals.

“Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital’s St John Eye Clinic in Gauteng. St John Eye Clinic is one of government eye clinics which provide treatment for various eye conditions, including retinal issues, glaucoma, and corneal problems,” explained Sello Lediga, spokesperson for the Department of Health.

Minister Highlights Importance of Regular Eye Health Check-Ups

Following his surgery, Motsoaledi encouraged South Africans to prioritize regular eye exams. Early detection of conditions such as cataracts and glaucoma can prevent avoidable vision loss and blindness.

“Regular eye tests are essential to maintaining eye health and preventing serious conditions that could lead to irreversible vision damage,” Lediga emphasized.

The Department of Health has partnered with Transnet to bring eye care services to communities nationwide through the Phelophepa Healthcare Train. The mobile initiative offers free eye tests, affordable glasses, and a range of other health services.

“This is part of taking health services to the people programme, which is crucial for the country to achieve Universal Health Coverage, ensuring equitable access to quality healthcare, reducing health inequalities, and improving population health outcomes,” added Lediga.
