““He Didn’t Talk Too Much” — Bheki Cele Remembers Mthethwa’s Crime-Fighting Legacy

Former Police Minister Bheki Cele has paid tribute to the late Nathi Mthethwa, highlighting his impactful role in combating crime during his time in office.

Cele, who served as National Police Commissioner while Mthethwa was minister, emphasised that the country experienced lower crime levels under his leadership.

“Crime was not as rampant then. Crime statistics showed that work was being done during those times,” Cele noted, stressing the progress achieved in policing initiatives.

During Mthethwa’s tenure, Cele explained, the police service saw meaningful changes, including the reinforcement of specialised crime tactical teams. Together, the duo worked to implement strategies aimed at improving law enforcement and public safety across the nation.

Beyond his professional achievements, Cele reflected on Mthethwa’s character, describing him as a grounded and thoughtful individual.

“He didn’t talk too much but whenever he spoke, he always spoke sense. He is a person who you could always listen to, and even if you took him on, he would always remain low,” said Cele.
