Hawks Seize R2.7 Million Explosives Truck From Zimbabwe

A major Hawks operation at the Beitbridge Port of Entry led to the interception of a truck carrying a large shipment of explosives on Friday.

The vehicle was stopped by a joint team comprising the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, the Border Management Authority (BMA), and South African Police Service (SAPS) as it allegedly crossed into South Africa from Zimbabwe.

Driver Arrested After Attempted Escape

According to Hawks spokesperson Avele Fumba, the 42-year-old truck driver allegedly tried to flee the scene.

Fumba said “the alert team acted swiftly and successfully apprehended the suspect” before he could escape.

A thorough inspection of the vehicle uncovered a concealed stash of explosives, raising serious concerns about potential criminal activity.

Authorities confirmed the discovery of a substantial cache, including “3,970 blasting cartridge tubes, 48 Cammex connector capsules and 10 reels of detonator fuse”.

The explosives alone are estimated to be worth around R769,000. The truck, believed to have been used in the alleged offence, was also seized and is valued at approximately R2 million — bringing the total value of confiscated items to about R2.7 million.

Specialist units, including the Musina Local Criminal Record Centre and the explosives division, were called in to secure and process the scene.

Strong Warning from Hawks Leadership

The suspect is expected to appear at the Musina Magistrate’s Court on Monday, where he will face a charge of possession of explosives.

Acting provincial head of the Hawks in Limpopo, Lesibana Meshack Malapile, issued a firm warning following the bust.

“This is not just an arrest but it is a warning. Criminals must understand that our borders are not open doors for danger.”

He added: “What was intercepted here could have destroyed lives, families and communities. Every explosive taken off the streets is a life saved.”
