Hawks Rescues Kidnapped Stellenbosch Shopkeeper In High-Stakes Operation

Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) rescue kidnapped a Stellenbosch shopkeeper from a high-stakes operation held for ransom and facing death threats, on Friday night. This dramatic rescue led to the arrest of three suspects.

The victim was last seen on February 27 after leaving his shop in Stellenbosch, Western Cape. When he failed to return home, concerned family members reported him missing. Soon after, they received a chilling WhatsApp message from an unknown sender demanding R100,000 in exchange for information about his whereabouts.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Siyabuela Vukubi stated that the sender of the message claimed to be a middleman negotiating on behalf of the kidnappers.

“The kidnappers were demanding R5 million, but the so-called middleman insisted he needed R100,000, fearing for the victim’s life,” said Vukubi.

Meanwhile, the ordeal escalated when the victim’s brother received a video showing the shopkeeper with his hands tied and eyes blindfolded. More threats followed, warning that the victim would be killed if the demands were not met.

Swift Police Action Leads to Rescue

An intense investigation led police to identify two suspected vehicles on February 28. Law enforcement officers, including the Boland K9 Unit, intercepted one of the vehicles, a black VW, near Stellenbosch.

“The victim was found inside the vehicle, bound and severely beaten,” Vukubi confirmed. “He was immediately rescued and transported to the hospital with serious head injuries.”

Authorities arrested three suspects, aged 28, 35, and 39, who now face charges of kidnapping, assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm (GBH), armed robbery, and extortion.

However, the suspects are expected to appear in the Stellenbosch Regional Court on March 3. Also, Investigators would continue to probe the case to determine if additional suspects were involved.
