Hawks Officer And Tembisa Hospital Administrator Arrested In R100k Bribery Scandal

Two officials, one from the Hawks and another from Tembisa Hospital, have been arrested in a bribery case linked to ongoing corruption investigations at the hospital.

The pair were taken into custody on Sunday and are expected to appear at the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 24 November 2025, on charges of corruption.

Hawks spokesperson Brigadier Thandi Mbambo confirmed the arrests, noting that the case stems from an alleged attempt to interfere with an active investigation into irregularities at the healthcare facility.

“It is alleged that on Friday, 21 November 2025, a DPCI officer was approached by a 41-year-old suspect, a sergeant from the DPCI. The Sergeant informed the officer that a 53-year-old Tembisa Hospital official wanted to meet regarding an ongoing investigation linked to the hospital.”

R100k Bribe Attempt Sparks Hawks Operation

Mbambo said the sergeant had indicated that the hospital official was seeking assistance and was prepared to pay a bribe to avoid prosecution in the broader Tembisa Hospital probe.

“On Sunday, 23 November 2025, the Hawks member and the Tembisa Hospital official met with the complainant, the investigator in the case, and handed over R100 000 cash as gratification.

“An operation authorised by the Director of Public Prosecutions was subsequently executed by the DPCI’s Serious Corruption Investigation unit, leading to the arrest of both the Sergeant and the Tembisa Hospital official,” Mbambo said.

The Acting National Head of the Hawks, Lieutenant General Siphosihle Nkosi, commended the officer who refused the bribe.

“We assure the public that investigations relating to corruption at Tembisa Hospital will continue without deterrence. We also emphasise that those within the DPCI who involve themselves in criminal activities will be rooted out of the organisation,” said Lieutenant General Nkosi.

Tembisa Hospital Corruption Probe Linked to Babita Deokaran

The broader investigation into corruption at Tembisa Hospital was triggered by a report compiled by the late whistleblower Babita Deokaran, assassinated on 23 August 2021.

Her report outlined serious procurement irregularities within the hospital’s Supply Chain Management division.

The luxury car is one of only 100 ever manufactured — as part of an eye-watering R208 million luxury car spending spree executed through more than 40 shell companies.

The DPCI reiterated its commitment to “transparency, accountability, and the rule of law” and vowed to intensify efforts to stamp out corruption.
