Hawks Investigate Fraudulent Loan Application Using Falsified Financials

A 43-year-old company director has been arrested in connection with a fraudulent R1 million overdraft application.
This is coming after a high-level investigation by the Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime Investigation unit based in Secunda, Mpumalanga.

The arrest stems from a 2023 incident involving forged financial documents submitted to a bank in support of an overdraft application for a company registered in 2013.
The bank initially rejected the application due to the company’s unstable financial status.
However, authorities allege that the director resubmitted the request using manipulated documentation that falsely inflated company profits while concealing tax liabilities owed to the South African Revenue Service (SARS).
The misrepresentation led to the approval of the R1 million facility.
Year-Long Probe Leads To Arrest
The Hawks, supported by units from Serious Corruption and Serious Organised Crime Investigations, launched a comprehensive investigation that lasted nearly a year.

Hawks findings led to the issuance of a warrant for the suspect’s arrest.
The director was apprehended following Hawks operation on 2 May 2025 in Brackenhurst, a suburb near Alberton in Gauteng.
He is expected to appear before the Evander Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 5 May 2025, to face charges relating to fraud and the contravention of financial laws.

Authorities Commend Team Effort
Brigadier William Mokonyama, Acting Provincial Head of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation in Mpumalanga, praised the dedication of the investigative teams.

According to him, “We have a dedicated team on the ground committed to getting to the bottom of every criminal activity and bringing perpetrators to justice,” he said.
The case has also strained the relationship between the two directors of the companies involved, who had jointly registered businesses in 2011 and 2013.
One now finds himself a key witness, while the other faces prosecution.
Authorities have confirmed that further investigations are ongoing.
