Hawks Arrest Suspects In R378,000 Pension Fraud Case

The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, widely known as the Hawks, has arrested two men involved in defrauding an unsuspecting pensioner of R378,000. This case, which has its roots in 2007, has recently drawn attention due to the arrest of a former company director in Thabazimbi.

Hawks Uncover Fraud Scheme

The Hawks’ spokesperson, Warrant Officer Lethunya Mmuroa, provided insight into the events leading up to the arrest. In an advertisement featured in a business magazine called “Succeed,” a franchise opportunity for PHD Health Market was presented.

The victim, enticed by the offer, expressed interest and reached out to the company. During this interaction, the suspect identified himself as the director of PHD Health Market, claiming that the franchise was priced at R700,000 with an initial deposit of R150,000 required.

Following their agreement, the pensioner paid the deposit, after which meetings were scheduled to facilitate the purchase of business premises. Tragically, instead of receiving support, the victim was asked to pay an additional R228,000 for equipment, which was never delivered.

Despite the woman filing a complaint with the Lebowakgomo police station back in 2009, it was only recently that the Hawks were able to pursue the case vigorously.

The Arrests and Investigation Process

After extensive investigation efforts and engagement with the National Prosecuting Authority, an arrest warrant was issued for the primary suspect. Surveillance revealed his whereabouts in Gauteng, prompting an operation led by Hawks officers from Limpopo.

Despite attempting to evade capture by fleeing from law enforcement, the suspect was apprehended with the assistance of local detectives and other security agencies.

The co-accused, Pieter Antonio Dupper, was also arrested and appeared in the Thabamoopo Magistrate’s Court. He received bail set at R10,000. Brigadier Lesibana Meshack Malapile, acting head of the Hawks in Limpopo, commended the collaborative efforts of law enforcement, farmers, and private security, which led to the successful arrests.

The Hawks continue to emphasize the importance of community involvement in preventing such fraud cases and ensuring justice for victims.
