Hawks And Anti-Gang Unit Seize AK-47 Rifle In Manenberg Raid

Another illegal assault rifle has been taken off the streets of Cape Town following a joint operation between the Hawks and the Anti-Gang Unit.

Authorities acted on a tip-off and raided a property on Joseph Street in Manenberg on Wednesday, where they discovered an AK-47 rifle. A 61-year-old man was arrested on the spot for possession of a prohibited firearm.

Growing Concern Over Assault Rifles in Cape Town

This latest seizure adds to a worrying trend of high-powered weapons surfacing in Cape Town. In August, police confiscated two AK-47s in Gugulethu and another six in Bellville, raising concerns over the circulation of such firearms in gang-affected areas.

Hawks spokesperson Siyabulela Vukubi confirmed that the suspect will appear before the Athlone Magistrate’s Court on Friday.

“The team swiftly acted on information regarding an AK-47 assault rifle. The information was immediately operationalized and upon searching the premises, an AK-47 assault rifle was found. The suspect was arrested as he could not account for the possession thereof,” Vukubi stated.
