Hangwani Maumela Attempted R52 Million Supercar ‘Pagani’ Purchase Amid Tembisa Hospital Tender Probe

Businessman Hangwani Maumela, linked to the R2 billion Tembisa Hospital tender controversy, reportedly attempted to purchase a R52.2 million Pagani Huayra Roadster. The high-end vehicle was never officially registered in his name, with the purchase abandoned due to the escalating cost.

Maumela’s assets, including a collection of luxury cars, were recently seized from a Sandton residence. Investigative journalist Jeff Wicks told Mandy Wiener that Maumela made a partial payment for the supercar in 2021.

The attempted purchase came months after Gauteng Department of Health whistleblower Babita Deokaran flagged shell companies controlled by Maumela as engaging in business with the hospital.

“One of only 100 in the world and only two in South Africa, so it is the epitome of automotive beauty and the price tag is commensurate,” Wicks said, highlighting the exclusivity of the vehicle.

Despite the attention on his wealth and luxury acquisitions, Maumela has not faced any criminal charges.

Wicks noted, “These asset preservations are usually a precursor to criminal action, but none of that has been forthcoming as yet, and it is disquieting because by our measure, he should face several hundred counts of fraud.”

Authorities are continuing to review his financial dealings and the connections to the controversial Tembisa Hospital tenders.
