Gunmen Open Fire On SAPS Informer Wiandre Pretorius Named In Slain Witness D Evidence

Police in Gauteng have opened an attempted murder investigation after gunmen fired multiple shots at a vehicle in Boksburg on Thursday morning. The shooting occurred shortly before 10am when unknown suspects targeted a bakkie believed to belong to SAPS informer Wiandre Pretorius.

The incident took place near Klapper Street, close to Boekenhout Street.

Gauteng police later confirmed a shooting was reported in Van Dyk Park, under the Dawn Park policing area, with the victim managing to escape without injury.

Madlanga Commission Raises Alarm Over Wiandre Pretorius Safety

The Madlanga Commission of Inquiry confirmed it had been alerted to an alleged attempt on Pretorius’s life, following growing concerns about the safety of individuals connected to its investigations.

“Yes, we got the news about an hour ago, and it had not happened too long before that. We are concerned about the safety of all witnesses and potential witnesses,” commission spokesperson Jeremy Michaels told Newzroom Afrika.

He stressed that Pretorius is not currently a witness before the commission.
“I should clarify that Mr Pretorius was not in the sights of the commission for the moment, and he certainly had not approached the commission with information or requests for assistance with his protection.”

Informer Named After Slain Witness Testimony

Pretorius’s name surfaced during evidence presented to the commission by murdered whistleblower Marius van der Merwe, also known as Witness D. Van der Merwe was killed after appearing before the inquiry, a development that has intensified fears around intimidation and violence linked to the commission’s work.

Michaels added: “I am aware that he is the subject of an investigation by another law enforcement agency – I wouldn’t want to get into the detail of that. We are in contact with the relevant law enforcement agencies in that regard.”

According to SAPS spokesperson Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi, the victim was attacked while entering his residence.

“The victim was about to drive into his residence when attacked by unknown suspects driving a white Toyota Vits. They fired shots at him before driving away. The victim escaped unharmed and the motive of the shooting is unknown at this stage. Investigations are underway.”

Pretorius has previously been linked to a case involving the dumping of a body in Brakpan nearly four years ago. Reports indicate the Independent Police Investigative Directorate has submitted the docket to the National Director of Public Prosecutions for a decision.

As the Madlanga Commission continues to investigate allegations of corruption, organised crime and collusion within law enforcement, the attempted shooting has added fresh urgency to concerns over the safety of those connected to its proceedings.
