Gunfire Erupts In Cape Town CIT Heist – Suspects Flee Empty-Handed

Criminals came up empty-handed in a botched cash-in-transit (CIT) heist near Borchers Quarry Road, Cape Town, on Monday night.

Footage shared on social media shows the stationary cash van with a burning Volkswagen Polo behind it, sparking widespread concern.

Police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk confirmed that the case has been handed over to the Hawks for investigation.

CIT Heist, Gunfire but No Injuries

According to Hawks spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Siya Vukubi, the incident took place at around 8pm in the Airport vicinity.

“It is alleged that security guards were accosted by a number of suspicious vehicles that blocked the cash vehicle to a standstill. A number of shots were fired, but no injuries were reported as a result of the shooting,” said Vukubi.

The suspects fled the scene without taking any money and remain at large.

Rising Concern Over Crime Trends

Anti-crime activist group Fight Against Crime SA (FACSA) voiced alarm over the attempted heist, warning that Cape Town may be facing the same CIT epidemic that has plagued Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal.

“We are deeply concerned that Cape Town is now seeing cash-in-transit heists, a plague that took hold in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal when the state failed to get a grip. Add this to gang wars, taxi violence, and extortion, and it’s clear criminals have no ceiling,” FACSA said in a statement.

The group also criticised the state of law enforcement, citing low capacity in specialised SAPS units and ongoing corruption scandals.

Authorities have appealed to the public to assist with the investigation.
