Residents in Atteridgeville, west of Pretoria, were jolted awake in the early hours of Monday morning by the sound of gunfire and explosions that sent shockwaves through the community.

Emergency services responded swiftly to the scene near a local filling station, where the disturbance was reported. The exact cause of the incident remains unclear at this stage.

The sudden eruption of violence left many residents fearful, with some venturing outside to understand what was unfolding, while others remained indoors to protect themselves.

“We were woken by loud bangs and rapid gunfire. It was terrifying, and no one knew what was happening. People around the area started screaming and running outside to see what was going on.

Some families stayed indoors, obviously fearing for their safety. Even after it quieted down, the tension in the area was still very high,” said a terrified resident.
