Gun Smugglers Nabbed At Marianhill Toll Plaza As Cop Faces Arrest

Law enforcement authorities in KwaZulu-Natal have intercepted an alleged arms dealer at the Marianhill Toll Plaza, uncovering a vehicle loaded with weapons and 800 rounds of ammunition.

The operation was carried out as part of the provincial government’s ongoing Nenzani La Ezweni campaign, aimed at combating crime on KZN’s road networks. The coordinated effort involved the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI), Durban Metro Police and the South African Police Service (SAPS).

KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, Siboniso Duma, confirmed that two suspects were arrested, one of whom is a police officer.

According to Duma, the suspects were unable to provide the required documentation to legally transport the firearms and ammunition.

“The two individuals involved, including a policeman, failed to produce valid documents demonstrating compliance with the Firearms Control Act.”

He warned that the illegal circulation of firearms remains a key driver of serious crime across the province.

“The proliferation of firearms and ammunition is a major contributor towards violent crimes and robberies,” Duma said.

Illegal Blue Lights Lead to Vehicle Impoundment

During the operation, officers also discovered that the suspects’ vehicle had been unlawfully fitted with security lights, in violation of the National Road Traffic Act. As a result, the vehicle was immediately impounded.

Duma stressed that authorities are intensifying their crackdown on the misuse of emergency lighting.

“By and large, the RTI is clamping down on the use of blue lights in any part of the province,” he said.

In a related development, three additional suspects were arrested for impersonating police officers. They were found in possession of fraudulent police appointment cards.

Duma confirmed that multiple law enforcement agencies are now conducting further investigations into both cases, as authorities work to dismantle networks involved in illegal firearms and police impersonation.
