Gugulethu Mass Shooting: One Suspect Arrested, Another On The Run

A 35-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a chilling mass shooting that left seven men dead in Gugulethu, Cape Town. The attack occurred in the early hours of Saturday morning at the Kanana informal settlement, where the victims were reportedly socialising before gunmen opened fire.

Provincial detectives from the Serious and Violent Crimes Unit worked around the clock to track down those responsible. Police spokesperson Colonel Andrè Traut confirmed the breakthrough: “Their relentless efforts culminated in the arrest of a 35-year-old suspect in the Cape Town City Centre,” he said.

The suspect is expected to appear in the Athlone Magistrate’s Court soon, where he will face formal charges related to the brutal killings.

Police Launch Manhunt for Second Suspect

While one suspect has been apprehended, police are still hunting for another man linked to the Gugulethu mass murder. Authorities have named Loyiso Matinisi as a wanted suspect in the case and are appealing to the public for help.

“Anyone with information on his whereabouts is urged to contact Sergeant Sithembele Sambunjelwa of the Serious and Violent Crimes Unit at 073 416 5224,” said Traut. “All information will be treated in the strictest confidence.”

Police have reiterated their commitment to tackling violent crime head-on.

“The SAPS remains steadfast in its commitment to confronting violent crime with the full might of the law. Those who choose to disregard the rule of law can expect to face its full consequences,” Traut said.

Cape Town Reels from String of Deadly Shootings

The Gugulethu massacre is just one of several deadly incidents that have rocked Cape Town in recent days. On Sunday, two more people were gunned down in Bush Street, White City, Nyanga.

According to police spokesperson Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi, gunmen stormed a home and opened fire on two young men, aged 23 and 25.

“Both victims did not survive the onslaught on their lives and were declared deceased on the scene by the medical personnel,” Swartbooi said.
