Grandmother Sentenced To 10 Years For Assaulting Grandson Over Bedwetting

A 43-year-old grandmother from Botlokwa, Limpopo, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for the assault and abuse of her four-year-old grandson.

The Morebeng Regional Court convicted the grandmother after a series of harrowing testimonies revealed the extent of her cruelty toward the child.

Her grandson was punished for something beyond his control: bedwetting.

Grievous Abuse And Threats Of Violence

The case began in 2023 when the grandmother allegedly lashed out at her grandson, physically punishing him for wetting the bed.

Witnesses testified that the child was struck repeatedly with a boomlat (a large wooden stick) by his grandmother and was even threatened with the severing of his private parts.

Despite her plea of not guilty, the testimonies of concerned neighbours and her former boyfriend painted a vivid picture of unrelenting abuse, leading to the conviction.

Chilling Impact On The Child’s Well-being

The victim, who lived in constant fear of further harm for something as natural as bedwetting, sustained multiple scars on his body and face.

His emotional and physical well-being were severely impacted by the grandmother’s actions.

Fortunately, concerned neighbours intervened, and it was the woman’s then-boyfriend who courageously reported the abuse to authorities.

His timely intervention led to her arrest and a subsequent investigation.

NPA’s Commitment To Zero-Tolerance For Child Abuse

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has reaffirmed its commitment to a zero-tolerance policy on child abuse.

Mashudu Malabi-Dzhangi, the NPA spokesperson, described the case as one of the worst forms of child cruelty.

Advocate Ivy Thenga, the Director of Public Prosecutions in Limpopo, praised the collaborative efforts of the prosecution team, stating that there were no compelling circumstances to reduce the sentence, while emphasizing that justice had been served for the vulnerable victim.
