Grade 9 Pupil Fatally Stabbed By Fellow Learner At Gauteng School

A tragic incident unfolded on Thursday, 12 March, when a 16-year-old Grade 9 pupil was fatally stabbed at Badirile Secondary School in Khutsong, Carletonville.

According to initial reports, the teenager sustained serious injuries during the incident and was rushed to a nearby clinic for medical treatment. Despite efforts to save him, he later died from his wounds.

Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane expressed deep sorrow following the devastating loss.

“We are devastated by this tragic loss of life and extend our heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased pupil and the Badirile Secondary School community,” he said.

Alleged Grade 10 Attacker Identified as Police Launch Investigation

The Gauteng Department of Education confirmed that the stabbing took place during school hours on Thursday morning.

Department spokesperson Steve Mabona said early information indicates that an altercation broke out between two pupils on the school premises.

“Preliminary reports indicate an altercation occurred between two pupils on school grounds on Thursday morning, during which a 17-year-old Grade 10 boy allegedly stabbed a Grade 9 pupil, causing severe injuries,” said Mabona.

Following the incident, the school has initiated internal disciplinary procedures against the alleged perpetrator while police continue their formal investigation into what led to the fatal stabbing.

Gauteng Education Department Sends Counsellors to Support Traumatized Pupils

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the Gauteng Department of Education has deployed its Psychosocial Support Unit to the school.

The team is scheduled to arrive on Friday, 13 March 2026, to offer counselling services and emotional support to pupils and staff affected by the shocking incident.

Meanwhile, MEC Chiloane has urged parents and guardians across the province to work closely with schools in addressing violence among young people.

“We strongly discourage any acts of violence among pupils, as such actions have irreversible consequences,” he said.

He further stressed that ensuring pupil safety requires cooperation between schools and families.

“We urgently call upon parents and guardians to assist us in instilling discipline in our children at home, as it takes a collaborative effort to ensure our pupils behave appropriately and remain safe,” Chiloane added.
