Grade 5 Learner Dies After Goal Post Falls On Him At Thembisa School

A dark cloud hangs over Thembisa after a 10-year-old Grade 5 learner tragically lost his life in an incident at school during break time.

The learner died on Monday, 16 February, at Reagile Primary School in the Winnie Mandela area of Thembisa, Gauteng.

Goal Post Collapse During Break Leaves Grade 5 Learner Fatally Injured

According to the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE), the incident occurred during the second break.

Spokesperson Steve Mabona said preliminary reports indicate that a group of learners, including the deceased, were playing around the soccer posts when one of the goal posts allegedly fell.

“It is reported that a group of learners, including the deceased, were playing in and around the soccer posts at school when a goal post reportedly fell on the learner, resulting in severe injuries,” Mabona said.

The school immediately contacted emergency services. Paramedics arrived within approximately 20 minutes and attempted to resuscitate the child at the scene. Sadly, he succumbed to his injuries.

Police Investigation and GDE Inquiry Under Way

Gauteng police have opened an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the fatal incident.

The GDE has confirmed that it will conduct its own inquiry.

The department has also deployed its psycho-social support unit to the school to provide counselling to learners, educators and the bereaved family.

Gauteng MEC for Education and Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation, Matome Chiloane, expressed condolences following the tragedy.

“The department is deeply saddened by this tragic incident. We wish to convey our heartfelt condolences to the learner’s family, fellow learners, educators, and the entire school community,” he said.
