Grade 2 Boy Threatens Female Classmate With Knife At Belhar Primary School

The mother of a Grade 2 learner at Belhar Primary School has raised serious concerns after her daughter was allegedly threatened with a knife and subjected to ongoing bullying by a fellow pupil.

According to the mother, the shocking incidents began earlier this year and have continued despite multiple interventions by the school.

‘He threatened her with a knife’

The mother said the harassment started in May when the young boy allegedly brought a knife to school and threatened her daughter along with other children in the class.

“In May, he brought a knife to school and threatened the kids in the class, including my daughter,” she said.

“Then in June, he forcefully restrained her, put her hands behind her back and tried to kiss her. He said my daughter doesn’t like him and couldn’t understand why she wasn’t submissive towards him.”

She said the traumatic experiences left her daughter deeply distressed and in need of counselling. “It seems like they [the school] keep making promises, but nothing comes of it. I’ve sent emails and attended meetings, yet the boy continues to bully my child,” the mother added.

Ongoing bullying From Grade 2 boy despite disciplinary action

Western Cape Education Department (WCED) spokesperson Bronagh Hammond confirmed that the department is aware of the case and that the matter is receiving serious attention.

“A disciplinary hearing was held following an investigation. The perpetrator was found guilty and sanctioned,” said Hammond.

However, Hammond acknowledged that despite the disciplinary process, there have been ongoing reports of bullying behaviour. “There have been continuous allegations of bullying despite counselling sessions and interventions. The WCED has attempted to engage the parents of the boy to explore further support, but these efforts have proved challenging.”

Hammond added that the two learners have now been separated into different classes, and educators have been briefed to monitor the situation closely to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all learners.

Meanwhile, the mother says she has since transferred her daughter to a new school, hoping to give her peace of mind and a fresh start.
