Grade 10 Learner Gives Birth In School Toilet Without Assistance

The Limpopo education department has launched an investigation following a distressing incident at Molautsi Secondary School in Bloodriver, outside Polokwane.
A Grade 10 learner, aged 16, gave birth in the school toilet without any medical assistance. The event has drawn significant attention to the prevalent issue of teenage pregnancies in the region.
According to reports, the young girl was seven months pregnant at the time of delivery, as confirmed by her mother.
This unexpected childbirth in the school premises has raised questions about the school’s awareness and handling of the student’s condition. It is yet to be determined if the school administration was cognizant of her pregnancy and if any measures were in place to support her during this period.

Suzan Xithlelani from the Limpopo Department of Education has stated that the investigation will focus on the communication protocols followed by the school.
Typically, schools are required to log pregnancy cases into their School Administration Management System (SAMS). Unfortunately, it appears this procedure was not followed in this instance. The department aims to ascertain whether any educators were aware of the girl’s pregnancy and failed to report it through the correct channels.
This incident is not isolated, as there have been numerous reports over the years highlighting a high rate of pregnancies among learners at the school.
The education department’s investigation will also explore systemic issues and potential lapses in protocol to prevent such occurrences. Ensuring student welfare and addressing the challenge of teenage pregnancies remain top priorities for the department.
