Gqeberha SAPS Seizes R28 Million In Drugs, Arrests Three In Coega Bust

The South African Police Service (SAPS) Flying Squad in Gqeberha has struck a major blow against the illicit drug trade, seizing narcotics valued at nearly R28.7 million and arresting three suspects on Thursday, 2 October 2025, in the Coega industrial area.

While conducting routine patrols along the M17, the Gqeberha Flying Squad noticed a white Toyota RAV4 parked on the roadside.

Officers observed two men carrying large bags from nearby bushes and loading them into the vehicle. Upon questioning, the driver claimed to have no knowledge of the bags’ contents.

A search of the vehicle revealed three large brown parcels of dagga, as well as boxes containing crystal meth and cocaine.

The total haul included 164 kilograms of dagga worth an estimated R21,320,000, over 10 kilograms of uncut crystal meth valued at R2,281,950, and more than 2 kilograms of cocaine worth around R5,097,000 — bringing the total estimated street value to R28,698,950.

Suspects Face Drug Dealing Charges

The three suspects, aged between 35 and 38, were immediately detained and are facing charges related to the possession and dealing of drugs. They are expected to appear before the Motherwell Magistrates’ Court soon.

Authorities have described the bust as one of the most significant drug seizures in the Eastern Cape in recent months. The confiscation has disrupted a potential supply chain of dangerous narcotics intended for local communities.

SAPS Commends Officers and Urges Community Cooperation

Eastern Cape District Commissioner, Major General Vuyisile Ncata, praised the officers involved for their vigilance and swift action.

“The confiscation of these drugs has undoubtedly prevented them from reaching our communities and destroying lives. We will continue to intensify operations targeting drug dealers and organised crime syndicates,” said Maj Gen Ncata.

The SAPS has urged the public to assist law enforcement by reporting any suspicious activities linked to drug dealing or organised crime in their areas.
