Gqeberha Mob Justice Attack Leaves Two Dead As Three Suspects Are Arrested

Three people have been arrested following an alleged mob justice attack in Gqeberha that claimed the lives of two men and left a third fighting for his life. Police were called to a property in Soweto-on-Sea after reports that several people were being assaulted. The surviving victim was rushed to hospital with critical injuries.

The incident unfolded on Tuesday morning when officers on patrol responded to information about an assault at a house in the area. What they discovered inside the property has since led to murder and attempted murder charges against three suspects.

Gqeberha Mob Justice Victims Found Inside Soweto-on-Sea House

Eastern Cape police spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg said officers were directed to the house while conducting patrols. When they arrived, police knocked on the door but initially received no response despite seeing people inside the property. Officers became suspicious after noticing bloodstains on one of the occupants.

“Upon arrival, police knocked at the premises but initially received no response, despite observing people inside the property.

While engaging with the occupants, officers noticed bloodstains on the trousers of one of the men at the premises and requested additional police assistance,” Janse van Rensburg said.

After gaining access to the house, officers found the bodies of two men aged 28 and 29. A third man was discovered in a back room with serious injuries and was transported to hospital for emergency medical treatment.

Gqeberha Mob Justice Attack Linked To Alleged Housebreaking

Police say preliminary investigations suggest the three victims had been accused of involvement in a housebreaking at the property over the weekend. The occupants were reportedly away when the alleged burglary took place. Investigators have stressed that these claims remain part of the ongoing investigation.

“Preliminary investigations indicate that the victims were allegedly accused of being involved in a housebreaking at the property during the past weekend while the occupants were away.

“The matter is being thoroughly investigated, and these allegations remain part of the police investigation,” Janse van Rensburg said.

Two men, aged between 25 and 30, together with a 55-year-old woman, have been arrested in connection with the incident. They are expected to appear in the New Brighton Magistrate’s Court on charges of murder and attempted murder.

Police Warn Against Mob Justice In Gqeberha

Police have urged residents not to take the law into their own hands when they suspect someone has committed a crime. Instead, they have called on the public to report criminal activity so it can be investigated through the justice system. Authorities warned that acts of vigilantism remain criminal offences.

“Police have reiterated that members of the public should never take the law into their own hands. Anyone suspected of committing a crime should be reported to the police so that the matter can be investigated through the criminal justice system.

“Acts of vigilantism and mob justice are criminal offences and will be dealt with accordingly,” Janse van Rensburg concluded.

Investigations into the incident are continuing as police work to establish the full circumstances surrounding the attack.
