Government Launches High-Profile Lawyer Protection Plan Amid Rising Attacks

The Department of Justice and Constitutional Development has unveiled a new integrated plan aimed at protecting legal practitioners involved in high-profile cases. This comes in response to a troubling rise in attacks against lawyers, auditors, and investigators tackling corruption.

The latest incident occurred last Friday in Saxonwold, Johannesburg, where insolvency lawyer Bouwer van Niekerk was tragically killed at his office.

Enhanced Security Measures in the Pipeline

Department spokesperson Terrence Manase says the recent spate of attacks has pushed Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi to fast-track the plan’s implementation.

“It’s an integrated security plan not only for the legal practitioners but also for the courts.

“Currently, what this plan is looking at is the introduction of ICT in court matters, maybe the possibility of conducting proceedings remotely in high-risk incidents, introduction of high-tech CCTV cameras in our premises and that plan is at an advanced stage,” Manase explained.

Manase emphasized that the plan involves close coordination with multiple stakeholders within the justice sector.

“We’re working with various stakeholders in the justice sector to make sure that practitioners, court users, and officials are secure in executing their duties,” he added.
