Google’s AI Power Play! Search Gets Major Makeover As Gemini Coding War Heats Up

Google has rolled out a massive artificial intelligence upgrade across its products, unveiling a redesigned Search experience and powerful new coding tools as the tech giant intensifies its battle for AI dominance. The announcements came during the company’s annual developer conference in Mountain View, where executives showcased how deeply AI is now embedded into Google’s future plans.

The company’s famous Search box is being revamped to better understand longer and more detailed prompts, reflecting the growing popularity of chatbot-style conversations online. Google also revealed plans for AI agents capable of helping users manage reservations, track interests and monitor aspects of their health.

The organisation’s CEO Sundar Pichai said artificial intelligence is transforming every area of the company’s operations.

“The focus on AI is ‘lighting up every part of the company,’” Pichai said.

“All of the relentless shipping, the rapid advances in technology, it’s been a period of hyper progress.”

Google AI Search Upgrade Brings Smarter Features To Users

Google’s AI Search upgrade is aimed at making online searches feel more natural and conversational. The redesigned search box will expand to support longer questions while also making it easier for users to upload photos, files and other content directly into Search.

The company said its AI-powered assistants will eventually help users complete daily tasks more efficiently. Some of these features will only be available through paid subscriptions, widening the gap between free and premium Google experiences.

According to Google, interest in its Gemini chatbot app has surged over the past year. The platform now reportedly attracts around 900 million monthly users as the company pushes deeper into consumer AI services.

Gemini AI Coding Tools Put Google In Direct Fight With OpenAI

Google is also ramping up efforts in the highly competitive AI coding sector, where rivals like OpenAI and Anthropic continue to gain momentum. Company insiders have reportedly been concerned that Google risks falling behind competitors in AI-assisted coding technology.

During the event, Google introduced a fresh set of developer tools under the Antigravity platform. The initiative follows the company’s $2.4 billion acquisition of talent and technology from startup Windsurf.

Google also launched Gemini 3.5 Flash, describing it as its strongest coding-focused AI model to date. The company said the model performs faster than some competing systems while also reducing operational costs for developers.

“I think Google has a chance to catch up on AI coding,” said Ang Li, a former DeepMind researcher and current chief executive of Simular.

“It has a history of producing steady and slow wins.”

Gemini App Makeover And New AI Tools Expand Google’s Vision

The company revealed that paying subscribers will soon be able to build customised dashboards inside Search for tasks such as wedding planning or managing fitness goals. The company also launched a new $100 monthly subscription plan offering developers expanded access to advanced AI tools.

Another major reveal was Gemini Omni, a new AI model capable of generating content from text, audio, images and video prompts. Google said the tool will eventually allow users to create and edit videos using simple conversational instructions.

As AI-generated content becomes more common, Google confirmed it will strengthen its labelling of deepfake material. During the presentation, Pichai joked about an AI-generated image showing him eating burgers alongside Sam Altman and Elon Musk.

“It’s obviously fake. I don’t eat hamburgers,” Pichai said.

The Gemini app has also received a visual redesign featuring bright colours, animations and haptic feedback. Google described the refreshed appearance as “neural expressive”.

Subscribers will also gain access to Daily Brief, a personalised morning update summarising the day ahead. Next week, users will begin testing Gemini Spark, an assistant designed to actively complete tasks for users rather than simply answering questions.

“Spark represents a big shift for Gemini, transforming it from an assistant that can answer your questions into an active partner that does real work on your behalf and under your direction,” said Josh Woodward.

Google executive Nick Fox said the company remains committed to keeping Search widely accessible despite the growing number of premium AI products.

“We’re incredibly committed to search being available to billions of users across the world,” Fox said.

“You should just be able to bring whatever question is in your mind just type it into the search box,” Fox said. “We can broaden people’s aperture in terms of what they understand that search can do.”
