Gogo Maweni Out On R5,000 Bail Amid Assault Charges

South Africa’s most controversial sangoma, Gogo Maweni, is back in the spotlight after appearing at the Protea Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
The Izangoma Zodumo star, whose real name is Makhotso Lee-Anne Mofokeng, was arrested last week in connection with a 2019 assault case.

The Charges
Maweni, 39, is accused of hitting a woman in the face with a bottle during an altercation in Moroka, Soweto. Following her arrest by the Gauteng Cold Case Unit and counter-intelligence investigators, she was granted R5,000 bail. The matter has been postponed to February 11, 2025.
Adding to the unfolding story, Maweni’s lawyer, Marcia Makuse, revealed that the traditional healer is pregnant with twins and in her first trimester. Makuse also stated that Maweni was unaware the police were searching for her until she was contacted to report to the Mondeor Police Station the previous Sunday.
Gogo Maweni in the Hot Seat
Maweni, who rose to fame through the reality show Izangoma Zodumo, is no stranger to controversy. From allegations of using witchcraft against her former partners to her very public feud with fellow sangoma Gogo Skhotheni (Patricia Motsoeneng), drama has always followed her.
Although she and Skhotheni publicly reconciled in January 2025 after their bitter online spat, this latest legal battle reminds us that Maweni’s name stays buzzing in the streets of Mzansi.
What’s Next?
While Maweni seemed calm in court, her legal troubles are far from over. As her case unfolds, all eyes will be on her next move, both in the courtroom and in her career.
Will Gogo Maweni manage to juggle her legal woes, her growing family, and her controversial public persona? February 11 can’t come soon enough to reveal the next chapter of this ongoing saga.
