Gerrie Fourie Bids Emotional Farewell To Capitec After 25 Years Of Transformational Leadership

Capitec’s Annual General Meeting on Friday, 18 July, was anything but ordinary. Held in Stellenbosch, it marked the end of an era as Gerrie Fourie, the bank’s long-serving CEO, took the stage one final time to address the institution he helped build over a 25-year journey.

From the beginning, Capitec chair Santie Botha made it clear this was a heartfelt farewell. She reminded attendees that Fourie was hand-picked by co-founder Michiel le Roux in 2000 to help build a new kind of bank—one that would later reshape South Africa’s financial landscape.

“Over the past six years, I’ve had the privilege of working closely with Gerrie and observing his modus operandi first-hand,” said Botha. “He is a phenomenal leader and CEO. His approach to business is unique and he sets a very specific tone from the top.”

Botha praised Fourie’s relentless focus on performance and excellence, describing how he cultivated an “A-team” leadership culture with zero tolerance for mediocrity. Known for drilling into the details, challenging assumptions, and demanding clarity, Fourie’s leadership style became synonymous with accountability and results.

Heartfelt Reflections and a Culture of Commitment

Fourie’s farewell presentation began in his typical relaxed, engaging style, highlighting Capitec’s latest achievements. But it wasn’t long before emotion surfaced as he turned his focus to the people behind the bank’s success.

“To the Capitec team, it was a tremendous 25 years working with you,” he said, his voice filled with gratitude.

He recalled a memorable moment during a systems outage in August 2022, when staff worked through the night to restore services. “Our consultants don’t close a branch at 5pm. They wait until the last client leaves. That is our family,” he shared, illustrating the dedication that defines the Capitec culture.

Fourie also reflected on bold decisions made under his leadership—particularly during the uncertainty of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020. “It was scary. But over three years, we invested an additional R6 billion – and that is how we created what Capitec is today,” he said, crediting the board’s trust and boldness in navigating the crisis.

“You know, I actually thought this morning – everything I asked for, I got. And I know it sounds windgat [like a braggart],” he added with a laugh, drawing warmth and laughter from the audience.

Gerrie Fourie Passing the Torch: Gratitude and New Beginnings

In an emotional close, Fourie turned his thanks to his family, especially his wife, Reinie. “This is the difficult part,” he said, his voice trembling. “From my side … thank you. And to my dad – my biggest supporter.”

Fourie then offered a heartfelt tribute to his successor, Graham Lee, who began his Capitec journey in 2002 as Fourie’s business analyst. “He couldn’t speak a word of Afrikaans,” Fourie joked, before affirming Lee’s strong leadership potential.

“Graham brings technological insight, data fluency, execution ability and, most importantly, a passion for people,” he said. “It’s a privilege to hand the baton to you.”

The AGM concluded with a standing ovation—a fitting send-off for a leader who shaped Capitec into one of South Africa’s most innovative banks.
