General Mkhwanazi Signals Imminent Arrests In Ongoing AKA And Tibz Murder Probe

KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi has confirmed that the murder investigation into rapper Kiernan “AKA” Forbes and his close friend, celebrity chef Tebello “Tibz” Motsoane, remains active, with more arrests potentially on the horizon.

His comments came on Tuesday, 11 November 2025, following the extradition of Siyabonga Gezani and Malusi David Ndimande from Eswatini.

The brothers, who are accused of playing central roles in the assassinations, briefly appeared at the Durban Magistrate’s Court, where their case was postponed to 25 November for legal consultations.

Speaking to journalists outside the court, Mkhwanazi said that the police are continuing to gather evidence that could lead to further suspects being apprehended.

“Yeah. What we can tell you is that part of these seven, we did explain before that they play different roles.

“We know that there is a head who coordinated everything, and that person paid the entire group after the job, but he used his bank account to transfer money, and that’s a business account that he used,” General Mkhwanazi explained.

General Mkhwanazi: Police Track Financial Links to Identify Possible Financiers

Mkhwanazi revealed that investigators are now following a money trail believed to connect the alleged mastermind, Mziwethemba Gwabeni, to other individuals who might have financed or influenced the operation.

“We are investigating further the linkages of his business account with other partners who transferred money into the business account. So, we are identifying all those with whom he had a business interest that would have moved money into that account,” he said.

The Police Commissioner indicated that detectives are focusing on uncovering whether influential figures may have been involved in commissioning the high-profile hit.

Investigation Expands Toward Possible Higher-Level Involvement

“We are busy looking at those to establish exactly who above him might have requested, perhaps, to coordinate this operation.

“But until we have that evidence, there’s still a lot of investigation work that needs to be done to prove that there is a relationship that might be corrupt, if there is any, and then we’ll be able to move up the ladder, if need be,” Mkhwanazi added.

AKA and Tibz were fatally shot on the 10th of February 2023 in Durban.

Many are hopeful that the ongoing probe will finally reveal who ordered the deadly attack.
