‘Mabahambe’ Stance Unshaken: Gayton McKenzie Defends Position Amid SA-Nigeria Trade Deal Criticism

Patriotic Alliance (PA) leader Gayton McKenzie has reaffirmed his party’s firm “Mabahambe” stance, dismissing criticism of his silence on President Cyril Ramaphosa’s recent decision to bolster South Africa-Nigeria trade relations.

Speaking out on social media, McKenzie emphasised the PA’s unwavering commitment to addressing undocumented immigration. He stated that the party remains resolute in its mission, even as part of the Government of National Unity (GNU).

Gayton McKenzie: ‘We Fight From Within the GNU’

Addressing concerns about the PA’s position within the GNU, McKenzie said, “Abahambe is our mission as the Patriotic Alliance. We will never change. We’ve decided to fight from within. Should we leave because a decision we’re unhappy about is taken? We are not children.”

He noted that the GNU has allowed the PA to influence policies, albeit not as rapidly as some might wish. McKenzie reaffirmed the PA’s dedication to its principles while working as part of the coalition government.

Ramaphosa’s SA-Nigeria Trade Deal Sparks Debate

On Tuesday, Ramaphosa announced measures to simplify trade and travel between South Africa and Nigeria, including a five-year multiple-entry visa for eligible Nigerian businesspeople and a streamlined visa application process for Nigerian tourists.

The announcement, made following talks with Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, aims to attract Nigerian investments to South Africa. Ramaphosa stressed that the initiatives are part of efforts to improve the ease of doing business.

The Presidency later clarified that Nigerian visa applicants must submit a certified passport copy, addressing misconceptions that passports were no longer required.

Some critics argue that McKenzie’s silence on the trade measures undermines his party’s immigration stance. McKenzie countered by reiterating the PA’s dedication to its goals, saying, “We are realistic and will continue to fight from within.”
