Gauteng Taxi Association Chairperson Gunned Down In Suspected Hit

The National Taxi Alliance (NTA) has confirmed the killing of Gauteng National Taxi Association chairperson Thami Moyo, who was shot dead on Thursday while driving along the Soweto Highway.
“Yes, we confirm the incident, but the details are still sketchy at the moment. We can confirm that it has happened,” said NTA spokesperson Theo Malele, speaking to reporters.
Police Suspect Taxi Violence Behind the Shooting
Gauteng police spokesperson Lieutenant Mavela Masondo confirmed the fatal shooting but said it was too early to definitively link it to taxi-related violence.
“We cannot confirm that it’s related to taxi violence. But we suspect it is, taking into account that the victim is the chairperson of a taxi association,” Masondo told journalists at the scene.
According to police reports, Moyo was ambushed while driving alone. The suspects, traveling in a minibus taxi and a Toyota Yaris, opened fire and fatally wounded him. No valuables were taken from his car.
“This indicates that it was indeed a hit. We’ve started our investigation,” Masondo added.
He said the taxi violence task team would take over the case if evidence confirmed it was linked to ongoing taxi conflicts.
Soweto Highway Closed as Authorities Appeal for Information
Authorities have appealed to the public to assist with the investigation. “Anyone with information can contact their local police station or call our Crime Stop number at 08600 10111,” said Masondo.
The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) also confirmed road closures following the incident.

“Emergency personnel and law enforcement officials are on scene. Motorists are advised to exercise caution and use alternative routes such as the N1 and Immink Drive,” said JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla.
Both directions of the Soweto Highway between the N1 and Immink Drive in Diepkloof were closed to traffic while police processed the scene.
