Gauteng Police Officer Investigated After Alleged Bribe Request Caught On TikTok

A Gauteng police officer is facing investigation after a video circulating on TikTok allegedly shows him requesting a bribe from a member of the public while in uniform.

The clip, which has spread widely across social media platforms, prompted a swift response from the South African Police Service (SAPS), which confirmed that the officer has been identified.

Authorities said the matter is now under formal investigation.

SAPS Opens Criminal Against Police Officer

Police confirmed that both criminal and internal disciplinary processes have been initiated.

“A case of corruption has been registered for immediate investigation by the Provincial Anti-Corruption unit, and a departmental case has also been instituted against him,” SAPS said.

The incident has renewed scrutiny over police conduct, particularly regarding allegations of corruption within the force.

SAPS reiterated its position on such matters, stressing that misconduct of this nature will not be tolerated.

“SAPS maintains a zero-tolerance approach to corruption. Accepting or soliciting a bribe is a criminal offence and a serious breach of the SAPS Code of Conduct.”

Gauteng Police Commissioner Condemns Alleged Conduct

Gauteng Provincial Commissioner Tommy Mthombeni strongly criticised the officer’s alleged actions, warning of consequences for those who fail to uphold the law.

“We expect the highest level of integrity from our members. Those who betray the public trust will face the full consequences of the law,” he said.

The outcome of the investigation will determine the next steps, including possible criminal charges and disciplinary action.
