Gauteng Police Arrest Five Suspects Posing As Cops In R5 Million Truck Hijacking

Gauteng police have arrested five suspects aged between 50 and 69 for hijacking a truck carrying solar batteries worth an estimated R5 million.

The suspects were intercepted shortly after the hijacking on R25 Modderfontein Road in Sebenza.

They were found dressed in official Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) uniforms and South African Police Service (SAPS) reflector jackets.

According to police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo, the gang kidnapped the truck driver and posed as law enforcement officers to carry out the crime.

Fortunately, the driver was rescued unharmed, and the truck was recovered during the swift police response.

Arrest

The successful arrest was a result of coordinated efforts between several elite crime-fighting units.

The operation was led by the SAPS Tactical Response Team, Anti-Gang Unit, DPCI Gauteng Tracking Team, Gauteng Traffic Police Airwing, CAP Specialised Operations, and Tracker Connect.

This was successful following an intelligence report received by the SAPS counter-intelligence head office, which had been monitoring the suspects’ activities related to truck hijackings in Gauteng.

Authorities also confiscated two vehicles used during the crime—a Hyundai Accent and a Hyundai iX35.

Charges Include Impersonating Police Officers, Kidnapping

All five suspects now face multiple charges, including truck hijacking, kidnapping, possession of suspected stolen property, and impersonating police officers.

Police believe this breakthrough could lead to solving other similar cases involving suspects disguised as law enforcement personnel.

Gauteng Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni, commended the officers and private security teams involved in the operation.

Mthombeni said, “This is a great breakthrough as it might help us to solve other cases of truck hijackings, especially where the suspects are posing as police officers. I would like to thank all those who were part of this successful arrest.”
