Gauteng Man Loses Appeal Against Life Imprisonment For Rape, Sexual Assault Of Stepdaughter

A Gauteng man’s appeal against his life imprisonment sentence for the rape and sexual assault of his stepdaughter has been denied by the Pretoria High Court.
The man was found guilty of two counts of rape and one count of sexual assault in the Pretoria Regional Court in August 2023.

He was sentenced to life imprisonment for each count of rape and five years imprisonment for sexual assault in June 2024.
A Pattern Of Abuse
The victim, who was between the ages of 11 and 13 when the offences occurred, testified that her stepfather would enter her room at night, move her little brother from the bed, and proceed to have sexual intercourse with her without her consent.

The girl documented her encounters with her stepfather in her diary, which was later discovered by her mother.
This led to charges being brought against the man, and he was subsequently arrested.

The man’s appeal against the sentence was based on the claim that the court had misdirected itself in finding no substantial and compelling circumstances to deviate from life imprisonment.
However, the Pretoria High Court upheld the original sentence, ensuring that justice is served for the victim and her family.
