Gauteng Health Launches Single-Dose HPV Vaccination In Schools To Fight Cervical Cancer

The Gauteng Department of Health (GDoH) has officially launched its single-dose Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination campaign in both public and private schools across the province this Monday.
The initiative aims to protect young girls against cervical cancer, a disease that remains the second most common cancer among South African women, according to the Cancer Association of South Africa.
Life-Saving Protection for Girls Under 15
Provincial health department spokesperson Motalatale Modiba reassured parents about the vaccine’s safety and effectiveness.
“This life-saving initiative highlights the importance of immunising girls before the age of 15, as early protection significantly reduces the risk of developing cancer of the cervix or the mouth of the womb later in life,” Modiba explained.

The single-dose HPV vaccine targets HPV types 16 and 18, which are responsible for over 70% of cervical cancer cases, making it a critical step in cancer prevention.

Health experts emphasize that timely vaccination can dramatically reduce cervical cancer rates in South Africa.
By administering the vaccine at an early age, girls receive immunity before potential exposure to the virus, giving them long-term protection against a preventable disease.
“Parents should feel confident that this vaccine is both safe and highly effective,” added Modiba, reinforcing the government’s commitment to safeguarding young girls’ health.
