Gauteng Education MEC Calls For Urgent Community Action After School Gang Violence In Orange Farm

The Gauteng Department of Education is calling for urgent intervention from parents and the wider community following a string of gang-related violence at schools in Orange Farm.

The unrest has resulted in injuries, arrests, and significant disruptions to learning at Thetha and Vulanindlela Secondary Schools.

On Friday, 11 April, a student at Thetha Secondary was reportedly stabbed by a known gang member, sparking retaliatory action on Monday targeting the same learner.

Just two days later, another violent altercation took place at Vulanindlela Secondary School, where a Grade 11 learner was stabbed by a Grade 10 pupil.

The victim was rushed to a local clinic while the alleged perpetrator was apprehended by school patrollers and handed over to police.

Police Patrols And Support Teams Deployed To Affected Schools

In response to the escalating violence, the Gauteng Department of Education, working closely with the South African Police Service (SAPS), has deployed officers to conduct regular patrols and launched search operations on school grounds.

These efforts by the Gauteng department of education aim to restore safety and reassure learners, staff, and parents.

“Due to the heightened tensions and ongoing safety concerns, schooling has been disrupted not only at Thetha Secondary but also at nearby primary schools,” said the Gauteng department in a statement.

Psychosocial support teams have been dispatched to assist traumatised learners and staff.

The department has confirmed that school governing bodies will suspend all learners found to be involved in the gang activity and initiate disciplinary proceedings.

MEC Chiloane Urges Community To Join the Fight Against School Violence

Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane strongly condemned the violence, stressing that schools must remain safe havens for learning and growth.

“We unequivocally condemn all acts of violence and gang-related activity on and around school premises,” Chiloane said.

“Any students found involved will face immediate suspension and disciplinary action.”

He further appealed to parents, guardians, and community members to actively support safety and discipline in schools.

“We call on all parents, guardians, and community members to work with the department to instil discipline and protect our learners’ futures.

They deserve an environment free from fear and violence.”
