Gauteng And KwaZulu-Natal Remain On Alert As Heavy Rains And Storms Persist

After nearly two weeks of non-stop rain, both Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) remain under storm watch as adverse weather continues to lash the provinces.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a yellow level 2 warning for Gauteng, warning residents of severe thunderstorms that could bring heavy downpours, small hail, strong winds, and localised flooding.

In KwaZulu-Natal, the situation is even more serious, with a yellow level 4 warning in place. Days of intense rainfall have already triggered flash floods, road closures, and damage to homes in low-lying areas.

Many residents in Gauteng are beginning to wonder if the sunshine has disappeared for good, as inland regions continue to experience unrelenting rain.

Persistent Moisture System Keeps Gauteng Wet

Forecasters explained that the ongoing storms are being fuelled by a moisture-laden system spanning across the country’s interior. This system is expected to sustain afternoon downpours throughout the week.

“Warning levels remain the same. Rain chances decrease mid-week, but another round of showers and thunder showers is expected over the central and eastern areas this weekend,” said forecaster Tokelo Chiloane.

While a brief break in rainfall might occur mid-week, forecasters caution that residents should stay prepared for another bout of unstable weather heading into the weekend.

KZN Disaster Teams on High Alert Amid Flooding Threats

In KwaZulu-Natal, disaster management teams remain on standby as communities brace for further rain. Authorities are urging those living near rivers and slopes to remain alert and ready to act should water levels rise suddenly.

The province has already suffered significant damage due to the ongoing downpours, with several areas still recovering from flooded roads and property damage.
