Gauteng 2026 Online School Admissions Now Open For Grade 1 And 8: Everything Parents Need To Know

Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane officially launched the 2026 online school admissions for Grade 1 and Grade 8 on Thursday morning at the Ga-Rankuwa YMCA in Tshwane. This marks the beginning of the placement process for public schools across the province for the upcoming academic year.

“There are some parents who logged in earlier and expected the system to change immediately, but everything came online on time. Now, as we speak, applications are going through,” Chiloane said.

By 1pm on launch day, the system had already processed 213,654 online applications, including 93,042 for Grade 1 and 120,612 for Grade 8 learners. In the first hour alone, 78,645 applications were logged — highlighting just how vital and efficient the system has become.

“We are proud of this monumental achievement. This success reflects the improvements made to the system, which operated smoothly overall,” Chiloane added.

Parents Urged to Follow Guidelines to Avoid Glitches

Despite a successful rollout, more than 40,000 users attempted to access the portal before the official 8am start, causing delays. The MEC urged parents to respect the designated launch times to avoid system overloads.

“We urge parents to avoid accessing the site before the official opening time to prevent unnecessary glitches,” he said.

For those without internet access or smart devices, 81 decentralised walk-in centres have been set up across Gauteng — including the Ga-Rankuwa YMCA — to ensure every parent has access to the admissions process.

“We’re making sure that every parent, regardless of their location or means, can apply. These walk-in centres are key to ensuring no child is left behind,” Chiloane emphasized.

Priority for South African Learners and Transparent Placement Criteria

Addressing concerns over the fairness of the placement process, especially regarding foreign nationals, Chiloane clarified the system’s priorities.

“The system is open to all children, but priority is given to South African children,” he explained. “Foreign nationals must be in the country legally with the correct documentation. If any school is prioritising foreign learners unfairly, bring it to my attention.”

The placement algorithm takes into account proximity to the school, feeder zones, and previous schools attended. “For example, an early childhood development centre may feed into a particular primary school, and that is factored into the placement algorithm,” he noted.

Important Deadlines and How to Apply

Parents and guardians can apply from any internet-enabled device by visiting www.gdeadmissions.gov.za. The online admissions window will close at midnight on Friday, 29 August 2025.

“As the number of applications is expected to rise significantly later in the day, Chiloane urged parents not to panic. “So far, so good with the system,” he said.
