Murder Attempt on William Booth

William Booth narrowly escaped an attempt on his life on April 9, 2020, when gunmen opened fire on him outside his Higgovale residence while he was walking his dogs. The incident, which occurred during the national Covid-19 lockdown, prompted an extensive investigation led by seasoned detective Colonel Eddie Clark.

Colonel Clark detailed the investigative process that followed the attack. He searched the area for surveillance cameras and discovered footage of a white Hyundai Creta, which had captured suspicious activity. Residents were approached, and their camera footage was reviewed, leading to the identification of two suspects, Ebrahim Deare and Riyaat Gesant.

Arrests Of Alleged Gang Boss

A police operation ensued, resulting in the arrest of the vehicle’s driver, who has since become a State witness, and a woman who was in the vehicle.

The investigation traced the vehicle back to the gang’s headquarters on Argyle Street, where multiple arrests were made, including that of Moegamat Toufeek ‘Bubbles’ Brown’s wife, Kauthar. Confiscation of phones followed, with Kauthar later pleading guilty to her involvement in the plot and being convicted.

During the examination of phone records, Colonel Clark noted two numbers frequently registered near Pollsmoor Prison and placed within minutes of the shooting.

Humorous Courtroom Moment

While the defence objected to the continuous mention of Kauthar’s name in testimony, Clark humorously added, “And the girlfriend,” which elicited laughter from the courtroom. Clark shared that Meyer admitted during an interview to being in a romantic relationship with ‘Bubbles,’ who allegedly issued orders from prison.

The trial continues to unravel the complexities of the assassination plot against William Booth, revealing not only the criminal conspiracies but also the personal lives intertwined with these events.
