Galeshewe Woman’s Kind Gesture Turns Tragic As Family Friend Jailed For Rape

What began as a kind gesture turned into a horrifying ordeal for a 32-year-old woman in Galeshewe after she was raped by a man she trusted. The incident occurred in the early hours of 20 July 2024 when the woman, asleep in her shack, was awakened by a knock at the door.
Recognising the voice as that of Hughlin Swarts, a family friend, she allowed him inside and offered him a place to sleep. Moments later, the situation took a violent turn when Swarts strangled her, threatened to stab her if she screamed, and raped her.
Galeshewe Woman Rape Case: Swift Police Response Leads to Arrest
After the assault, the traumatised victim managed to escape and reported the incident to the police. Thanks to her quick action and the efficient response of law enforcement, Swarts was arrested soon after the report was filed.

During court proceedings, the 23-year-old accused chose not to apply for bail and remained behind bars until the trial concluded.

The Galeshewe Regional Court found Swarts guilty of rape and sentenced him to 15 years in prison. In addition to his sentence, the court declared him unfit to possess a firearm, and his name will be added to the National Register for Sexual Offenders.
The Northern Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola, praised Detective Warrant Officer Butinyane Letimela and Advocate Shareen Links for their dedication and commitment in ensuring justice was served.
