G20 Summit Road Closures Cause Major Delays Across Gauteng, JMPD Warns Motorists

The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) has cautioned motorists to expect significant delays as several major routes across Gauteng remain blocked to accommodate the movement of global leaders attending the G20 Summit.

Road closures have been implemented on multiple highways and key corridors, affecting traffic flow and travel times throughout the province. Authorities say these measures are necessary to ensure secure and efficient transport for summit delegates.

JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla has urged drivers to consider alternative routes where possible.

“With the closures and the opening, we can’t give you the exact times, but motorists can then just be aware that they could face close to 30 to 60 minute delays if those roads have been blocked off.

“So, just kindly be aware of that, especially on the major national roads within Gauteng. That’s the N14, the N1, R21, R24 and the M1; certain roads have been fully closed off, and others have been converted into dual carriageways.”

Major Gauteng Highways Hit by Temporary Closures

Motorists travelling on the N14, N1, R21, R24 and M1 are most likely to feel the impact, with some routes fully shut and others temporarily reconfigured to manage summit traffic.

The JMPD said adjustments may change throughout the day, depending on the movement of official motorcades.

Authorities emphasised that while exact closure schedules cannot be provided, drivers should anticipate delays of up to an hour, especially during peak summit activities.

JMPD Urges Planning and Patience as G20 Summit Continues

The department encouraged road users to remain patient and allow additional travel time until the summit concludes. Commuters relying on affected highways are advised to plan ahead, remain alert to updates and use detours where available.
