“Friend… I Just Want To Cuddle?” Pearl Thusi’s Memorial Tribute For DJ Warras Leaves Mzansi Shook

“Friend… I Just Want To Cuddle?” Pearl Thusi’s Memorial Tribute For DJ Warras Leaves Mzansi Shook

What was meant to be a heartfelt farewell turned into one of the most talked-about memorial moments in South African entertainment this week.

Media personality Pearl Thusi found herself at the centre of intense online backlash after sharing a deeply personal — and unexpected — story during the memorial service of her late friend and former co-host, DJ Warras.

DJ Warras, a beloved radio and TV personality, was tragically gunned down on Tuesday, 16 December 2025, in Johannesburg. On Friday, 19 December, family, friends and industry colleagues gathered to honour his life, legacy and impact. Emotions were already running high — and then Pearl took the mic.

Taking the podium, Pearl reflected on their long history together — from hosting gigs to their iconic chemistry on Live Amp.

Her voice, at times emotional, carried both grief and nostalgia as she attempted to bring levity into the room by sharing a memory meant to show the closeness of their bond.

But then… the tone shifted.

Pearl recalled an incident following a Castle Lite gig, explaining that Warras was anxious about missing his flight the next morning and insisted they share a hotel room.

According to Pearl, Warras brushed off her concerns with his usual carefree confidence.

“HE SAID, ‘YOU’RE MY SON. DON’T WORRY, FRIEND. WE’RE GONNA PUT THE PILLOWS AND EVERYTHING. I JUST WANT TO CUDDLE.’”

The room reportedly laughed — but online? Absolute chaos.

“Wrong Time, Wrong Story?” Social Media Reacts in Shock

Within minutes, clips of the speech began circulating online, and Mzansi was divided. While some viewers felt Pearl was trying to humanise Warras and honour their sibling-like bond, many others felt the story crossed a line — especially given the solemn nature of a memorial service.

Critics labelled the moment “bizarre,” “tone-deaf,” and “deeply uncomfortable,” questioning why such a personal anecdote was shared while the nation was still mourning a violent loss.

Others defended her, arguing that grief doesn’t follow a script — and that Pearl was simply being raw, honest and vulnerable in a moment of pain.

What was meant to be a walk down memory lane became a viral firestorm, placing Pearl Thusi under a harsh public microscope during one of the most emotional weeks of her life.

Was it an inappropriate overshare — or a misunderstood moment of grief?
