French Embassy Refutes Claims SAPS Detectives Were Blocked From Probing Ambassador Nathi Mthethwa’s Death In Paris

The French Embassy in South Africa has dismissed reports claiming South African Police Service (SAPS) officers were barred from entering France to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of the late ambassador, Nathi Mthethwa.

Mthethwa passed away in September after allegedly plunging from the 22nd floor of a Paris hotel. Following his death, SAPS indicated it would dispatch a group of experienced detectives to work alongside French authorities on the investigation.

But a recent Sunday Times report suggested that the officers were denied entry into the country, casting doubt over the progress of the inquiry.

French Embassy Rejects Visa Denial Allegations

In a statement, French embassy spokesperson Tristan Roussignol-Retif strongly rejected the claims, insisting the report was inaccurate.

“The allegation that five South African police officers have been refused visas to enter France, in relation with the passing of Ambassador Mthethwa, is simply not true.

“Only one police officer submitted a request for visa that was quickly granted. The official was able to travel to Paris and was welcomed by French authorities,” he said.

SAPS Investigator Did Travel to Paris

The embassy emphasised that cooperation between the two countries remains intact, reaffirming that the officer who applied was promptly authorised to enter France and engage with officials working on the case.
