The Free State Department of Education has voiced deep sorrow following the sudden death of a 15-year-old learner from HTS Sasolburg.

Nhlanipho Buthelezi, a Grade 9 pupil, collapsed while taking part in a school match at the DP de Villiers Stadium. The incident unfolded in front of fellow pupils and spectators.

He was immediately taken to hospital, but despite efforts to assist him, he was declared dead after experiencing severe breathing difficulties.

The tragic incident occurred during a school sporting event, where Nhlanipho suddenly fell ill on the field. Emergency assistance was sought, and he was rushed to a nearby medical facility for urgent care.

Education Department Reacts to Learner’s Sudden Death

Free State Education Department spokesperson Howard Ndaba described the incident as a heartbreaking loss for the community.

“We are deeply shocked by the tragic loss of Nhlanipho Buthelezi, a young life cut short. Our hearts go out to his family, friends, and the HTS Sasolburg community. We extend our condolences and support during this difficult time,” he said.
