Free State Grade 7 Learner Takes Own Life After Alleged Bullying At School

The Free State Department of Education is reeling after the tragic death of 13-year-old Mbali Mlaba.

Mlaba, a Grade 7 learner at Vulindlela Primary School in Harrismith, allegedly took her own life after enduring sustained bullying by a classmate.

The heartbreaking incident has flared up national concern around bullying in South African schools.

Mbali Left Heartbreaking Note Detailing Bullying Ordeal

According to provincial education department spokesperson Howard Ndaba, Mbali’s mother discovered a handwritten note explaining the reasons behind her daughter’s devastating decision.

The letter revealed that Mbali had been targeted and accused of cheating on a test by a classmate, who had allegedly bullied and physically assaulted her in the past.

“Mbali had expressed fear of her classmate and had even requested to be transferred to another school,” said Ndaba.

The Department confirmed that the bullying had occurred in the previous term and emphasized that incidents like this showcases the urgent need to address the psychological safety of learners in schools.

Condolences And Support

Free State MEC for Education, Dr Mantlhake Julia Maboya, extended her condolences to Mbali’s family and community.

Maboya said, “We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of a Grade 7 learner from Vulindlela Primary School.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.”

The Department of Education has deployed psycho-social support teams to the school to assist learners and educators affected by the tragedy.

“We take all bullying incidents seriously and are committed to creating a safe and respectful learning environment,” Ndaba added. “Parents, learners, and community members must work together to prevent such devastating outcomes.”

Tragedy Highlights Ongoing Bullying Crisis In SA Schools

Mbali’s death has drawn comparisons to a similar case reported last year, when 13-year-old Regomoditswe Baloyi of Phutha Primary School in Klipgat tragically ended his life after alleged bullying by a teacher.

That incident sparked community outrage and protests.

The Department urges anyone experiencing bullying or emotional distress to seek help through school support services or professional counselling.
