Fourth Officer Killed On Deadly N2: Traffic Cop Run Down At Mkhondo Roadblock

A routine roadblock on the N2 near Mkhondo ended in tragedy when a traffic law enforcement officer was fatally struck by a minibus taxi, marking the fourth such death on the same stretch of road.

The Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison confirmed on Friday that Provincial Traffic Inspector Dumisane Ndlovu (49) was conducting a stop-and-check operation outside Mkhondo towards Phongola when the collision occurred at around 5pm on Thursday.

Emergency services responded to the scene, but Ndlovu was pronounced dead on site.

Ndlovu was stationed at the Piet Retief Cost Centre and was an employee of the Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison (DCSSL).

Authorities have opened a culpable homicide case as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the fatal incident.

The department confirmed that the officer was carrying out official duties at the time of his death.

MEC Warns of Crisis as Traffic Officer Deaths Mount

Mpumalanga MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison Jackie Macie said the department was deeply shaken by the loss, warning that the continued deaths of traffic officials are severely undermining road safety operations.

“We don’t have enough traffic officers to police our roads. Losing even one officer cripples our efforts to enhance road safety,” said Macie.

She extended her condolences to the officer’s family, friends and colleagues, describing his passing as a major blow to both the department and the province.

N2 Near Mkhondo Emerges as High-Risk Zone for Law Enforcement

The N2 near Mkhondo has increasingly become a danger zone for traffic officers, with four law enforcement officials now having lost their lives in similar incidents while performing duties along the same stretch of road.

Concerns are growing over the safety of officers manning roadblocks in the area, as calls intensify for improved measures to protect those tasked with enforcing traffic laws.
