Four Women Sentenced For 11-Year Sassa Child Grant Fraud

Four women sentenced for 11-year Sassa child grant fraud by the Nelspruit Specialised Commercial Crimes Court. This is a result of defrauding the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) by illegally claiming child support grants for 11 years.

These convicted fraudsters are Nonhlanhla Madalane (36), Tswarelo Masuku (32), Nelile Shiba (29), and Prudence Nkosi (31) received five-year suspended prison sentences on Thursday.

According to Mpumalanga Hawks’ spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Magonseni Nkosi, the fraudulent activities began in 2012 and continued until their arrest in 2023.

The women colluded with unknown health workers to obtain fake birth certificates for non-existent children.
They then registered the “ghost children” with the Department of Home Affairs to access monthly Sassa child support grants.
The scam was uncovered when a whistle-blower reported the fraud to the Public Service Commission.

They were arrested in May 2023 and later released on bail.

As part of their sentencing, the court ordered the women to repay the stolen money in instalments:

💰 Madalane – R20,330.64
💰 Masuku – R20,238.23
💰 Shiba & Nkosi – R10,344 each

While they avoided immediate jail time, their sentences will be suspended for five years on condition that they do not engage in any fraudulent activities during this period.

Meanwhile, the Department of Social Development and law enforcement agencies continue to crack down on Sassa-related fraud, which diverts funds meant for vulnerable citizens.

Nkosi urged the public to report fraud to help protect South Africa’s social welfare system.

“This case highlights the importance of whistle-blowers in uncovering corruption. We encourage anyone with knowledge of fraudulent activities to report it,” he said.
