Four Suspects Killed In KZN Shootout As Police Open Fire On Wanted Men in Inanda

Four suspects were killed during a late-night shootout with police in KwaZulu-Natal on Tuesday.
Police confirmed the gun battle unfolded at Amatikwe Area 2 in Inanda after officers followed up on intelligence about wanted suspects hiding at the location.
According to police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda, officers had received information that the men — wanted in connection with cases including murder, attempted murder and robbery with a firearm — were inside a two-roomed shack.

Netshiunda said the confrontation began when officers arrived at the scene.
“When police arrived at the scene, a shootout ensued between the suspects and police, which resulted in the four wanted suspects sustaining fatal gunshot wounds,” he said.
Police recovered four pistols and several rounds of ammunition from the suspects. Investigations into the incident are ongoing.

The Inanda incident comes just days after two illegal miners, commonly known as zama zamas, were shot dead during a separate police operation on the West Rand.

The confrontation took place in Carletonville in the early hours of Sunday morning.
Police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe said members of the SAPS National Intervention Unit (NIU) acted on intelligence indicating that illegal miners were in possession of a large cache of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

“Upon arrival at the targeted house at around 4am on Sunday morning, members observed suspects attempting to flee by jumping out through windows. The suspects immediately opened fire on police officers, and members responded accordingly,” Mathe said.
She added that a prolonged exchange — lasting an estimated two hours — followed.
“As a result of the confrontation, two illegal miners were declared dead at the scene, two AK47s, two pistols and ammunition were seized.”
Mathe confirmed that no police officers were injured during the operation despite its intensity.
Investigations in both incidents remain underway.
