Four Killed In Inanda Shooting As KZN Police Probe Murder Case

Police in KwaZulu-Natal have opened four counts of murder following a fatal shooting in Bhambayi, Inanda, north of Durban.

The incident occurred shortly before midnight on Friday, when a group of community patrollers encountered three men believed to be linked to a series of robberies in the area.

According to preliminary reports, the confrontation took place along Nohohwana Skeke Street and quickly escalated into a shootout.

The exchange of gunfire resulted in four fatalities.

One community patroller and one of the suspected criminals were declared dead at the scene.

Two additional patrollers, who were wounded during the shooting, later died in hospital.

Authorities are continuing their investigation into the circumstances that led to the deadly confrontation.

Police Commissioner Urges Caution for Community Patrols

KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi has called on community patrol groups to prioritise safety and operate within the law.

He stressed the importance of cooperation with the South African Police Service (SAPS), warning against direct confrontations with suspected criminals.

“We have seen criminals shooting at police officers, meaning they will not hesitate to shoot at civilians,” he said.

Mkhwanazi added that structures such as Community Police Forums should serve as support to law enforcement rather than engaging in high-risk operations.

The incident, which occurred on the eve of the Workers’ Day holiday, has once again highlighted the dangers faced by community patrollers in areas affected by violent crime.

Inanda has experienced ongoing challenges with gun violence and criminal gangs involved in robberies and extortion.
