Four Busted With Drugs After Stolen Bakkie Spotted On N2

A late-night towing operation on the N2 in Cape Town ended dramatically after City law enforcement officers uncovered a stolen vehicle, fake number plates and drugs, leading to the arrest of four suspects.
According to Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security JP Smith, Auxiliary Law Enforcement officers and the Highway Patrol Unit spotted a Nissan Champ bakkie being towed by a Hyundai Accent on Sunday evening.
Officers became suspicious when they noticed two people sitting inside the towed bakkie, which is prohibited under national traffic legislation. Further concern was raised when they saw that the driver’s window had been smashed.
Tactical Stop Exposes Fake Plates and Drugs
A tactical stop was immediately carried out, and all four occupants were apprehended on the scene.
Smith said the situation escalated quickly once officers conducted their checks.

“Along with our Highway Patrol Unit, a hard tactical stop was implemented, and all four suspects were apprehended on scene. The Hyundai Accent had false number plates and fraudulent licence discs — belonging to a VW Jetta.”
During the search, officers also discovered that the suspects were in possession of mandrax.
Stolen Sea Point Vehicle Recovered
Further investigation confirmed that the Nissan Champ bakkie had been reported stolen from Sea Point just an hour earlier. Officers also found that the ignition had been tampered with, strengthening the case against the suspects.
“All four occupants, each with prior criminal records related to motor vehicle theft, were placed under arrest and handed over to Athlone SAPS for further investigation and prosecution,” Smith said.
Smith praised the officers for their vigilance and reinforced that law enforcement would continue to act decisively.
“We all have a duty to uphold the law. It doesn’t matter how ‘serious’ the offence is — our members will enforce the law regardless.”
