Foster Fires Bafana Bafana AFCON Glory As Angola Fall 2–1

Foster Fires Bafana Bafana AFCON Glory As Angola Fall 2–1

Bafana Bafana kicked off their AFCON group-stage campaign in style with a hard-fought 2–1 victory over Angola at the Stade de Marrakech in Morocco on Monday night.

It wasn’t vintage football, but it was exactly the kind of result that matters at a major tournament. The three points give South Africa a huge boost in their quest to reach the knockout stages and strengthen their reputation as one of the competition’s dark horses.

The win also made the night extra special for head coach Hugo Broos, who marked his 50th match in charge of Bafana by ending a painful 21-year wait for an opening-game victory at the Africa Cup of Nations.

Bafana Bafana’s Slow Start, Williams to the Rescue

Bafana struggled to find their rhythm early on and were second best for large spells of the first half. Angola looked sharper and more aggressive, and South Africa were fortunate not to fall behind inside the opening minutes.

Gelson Dala tested Ronwen Williams with a powerful header in the third minute, while Fredy came close soon after with a curling effort that forced the Bafana captain into another important intervention. Williams’ calm presence between the posts kept South Africa level during a difficult opening period.

Despite looking solid on paper, the centre-back pairing of Siyabonga Ngezana and Mbekezeli Mbokazi failed to gel in the first half, allowing Angola too much joy in attacking areas.

Appollis Breaks the Deadlock

Against the run of play, Bafana found a way back into the contest. Khuliso Mudau delivered a teasing cross into the box, Teboho Mokoena showed great control, and Oswin Appollis reacted quickest to smash a low shot past Hugo Marques to give South Africa the lead.

Angola, however, refused to sit back. They continued to press and were rewarded just before the break when Show side-footed home from a well-worked set piece after Ngezana conceded a foul. The teams went into half-time locked at 1–1, with Bafana still searching for stability.

Foster Delivers the Winner

Broos made a bold change at the break, bringing on Tshepang Moremi, and Bafana immediately looked more energetic. Moremi even thought he had scored moments later, only for VAR to rule the goal out for offside in the build-up.

Mbokazi then came agonisingly close with a long-range effort that rattled the crossbar, signalling that South Africa were growing into the game.

The decisive moment arrived when Moremi teed up Lyle Foster, who curled a superb strike from outside the box into the corner. It was a moment of real quality — and the goal that sealed a vital win.

With the defence showing improvement in the second half and confidence growing, Bafana will now turn their attention to a massive clash against Egypt on Boxing Day. It won’t be easy, but if they start quicker and build on this momentum, South African fans have every reason to believe.
