Former Zimbabwean MP Arrested In Pretoria After Explosives Found In Vehicle

A former Zimbabwean opposition member of parliament was arrested in Pretoria on Friday after police allegedly discovered explosives in his vehicle.

According to authorities, the 53-year-old politician was detained alongside a 78-year-old man. Both men are facing charges of possession of explosives and are expected to appear before the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

The former MP, known for his strong criticism of Zimbabwe’s ruling ZANU-PF government, has not been officially named. Police confirmed that his identity would be withheld until the court appearance.

Police Operation Follows Early Morning Tip-Off

Police said the arrest came after they received information that the suspects were travelling through Pretoria with potentially dangerous materials.

“Police received a tip-off that there were people travelling in a Ford Fiesta in Pretoria during the early hours of Friday morning. When police spotted the said vehicle, they stopped it and found 26 blasting cartridges and 15 capped fuse connectors.

“The pair will appear before the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court facing the said charges on Monday, 10 November 2025,” said police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe.

Authorities are still investigating the intended destination of the explosives. At this stage, it remains unclear where the pair were allegedly transporting the materials.
